Med Occ Med Talks
On Wednesday, May 1, Medical Occupation students in I and II were visited by graduates of GBHS making strides toward future medical careers. The following alumni presenters shared their experience with students from the 3rd-6th hours of teacher, Mrs. McNair-Levi, MS, AT at GBHS:
GBHS graduate Alex Cesal is working on becoming a chiropractor. Having received his bachelor's degree from CMU, he's currently pursuing his master's degree. He was able to share what his course schedule looked like in undergrad and contrast it with the coursework in which he's now enrolled at the graduate level. He stressed the importance of empathy in most medical professions and said that an injury his brother had in middle school made him consider the field of chiropractic. After many doctor visits, medical professionals had recommended a lifetime of pain medicine. One desperate trip to the chiropractor began his brother on a road to recovery without pain medicine. Alex feels he can make an important impact on the opioid crisis by going into chiropractic, heading off pain-causing injuries before pain medicine becomes the course of treatment. He went over some basics of his field and had the students pair up to locate specific places on the spine.

- 2012 GBHS grad, Hailey Fisher, Speech Language Pathologist student entering grad school for Audiology
- 2014 GBHS grad, Alex Cesal, Chiropractic Medicine Student

Hailey Fisher has finished up her bachelor's degree at Eastern Michigan University and moved on to graduate level for audiology. She explained the different issues people face that lead them to need a speech pathologist, what her education looks like, and why she chose the profession. She says patience is a very important part of being in that field. She came upon the career-path through a job shadow her parents suggested after she'd started her undergrad work in college.
McNair-Levi has been working with grads at the end of the semester to bring real-life examples to her students and present them with just some of the careers they can pursue in the medical field. She has more "Med Occ Med Talks" planned before the end of the school year.
