1st Graders at Myers Elementary Earn FISH Donations as Economics Lesson
The unit for these 1st-grade students began with a visit to the Myers 4th grade Market Day in December, an economics lesson where 4th graders sell goods they've made to other students. This familiarized the 1st graders with the basic ideas of creating small businesses.
Barb Smith from FISH of Grand Blanc then visited the students to explain the role of organizations like FISH in the community. FISH provides food, clothing and personal care products to those in need in the Grand Blanc community with the slogan, "Neighbors Helping Neighbors". Students also watched videos and talked about need and people in our own community that sometimes can't afford basic things like soap, toilet paper and toothpaste.
The students then created mini-businesses, where they provided some kind of service at school, such as sharpening pencils or straightening coat racks. For their services, they were paid in donations for FISH.
As part of the unit, they also completed a job application and created posters and Seesaw videos to advertise their businesses. Students carried their PBL into winter break by doing chores at home to earn "payment" in personal care items, as well. Students said they did chores like unloading the dishwasher and feeding pets in exchange for donations from their families. A writing reflection at the end allowed them to share their thoughts and what they had learned.
Mrs. Hawley said, "Our first-grade students did an amazing job providing services at home and at school."
