Senior Exit Interviews at GBHS

The panel will choose only two Grand Blanc High School seniors to receive a scholarship based on this semester's Exit Interview participants, and they have a very tough job.

Each semester, Seniors at Grand Blanc High School create "Exit Interviews" - it is a requirement of graduation that they typically produce and present in their English class - but some opt to also share their presentation with a panel of professionals. This serves to create another venue for students to expose their plans to objective influence, practice their presentation and communication skills, and it could also bring them a scholarship to help with their higher education goals.

Grand Blanc Administrators often stop in to observe sessions, and the morning brought in Principal Fray, Superintendent Garner, Asst. Principal Goetzinger, GB Board of Ed Trustee Yasmeen Youngs, and CTE Director Janet Roberts, just to name a few. Career Resource Center Program Assistant & EDP Specialist, Shenethea Mangrum hosted, introducing each student. Parents also snuck in to observe occasionally.

The Senior Exit Interview is part of the Educational Development Plan (EDP) for each student. There will be two groups of presentations at GBHS this year, and two scholarships will be given out at each. Another will take place in the spring. Every senior at GBHS has the opportunity to participate.

The results are inspiring. Each student brings their unique set of values, goals, and achievements. Students are required to answer 3 questions in their presentation: "Who am I?” "Where am I going?" and "How do I get there?" Hopefully, the creation of the Senior Exit Interview helps them gain a little more perspective and focus on their plan for the future.

In this winter group of students, we saw athletes, honors students, musical composers, singers, scientists, and even Miss Grand Blanc 2018. The students were planning to further their education at a wide variety of schools. They have applied and been accepted to Georgetown, Michigan State, U of M, Utah State, Loyola, and Michigan Tech, just to name a few. Some are still awaiting word from their preferred school. Many expressed the desire to travel abroad and credited a foreign language class they've taken at GBCS for their passion for another culture or place.

These students have had so many experiences in their time at Grand Blanc Schools. They are peer mediators, band members, Unified participants, class officers, volunteers, Early College attendees, and the list goes on... It was a testament to the huge variety of options available in Grand Blanc.

Perseverance was a common thread in many stories, as well. Students have overcome medical issues, academic and financial struggles, and personal obstacles. Another thing many had in common was a desire to help the environment, either with their career path or on their own time. More than one wants to run for public office. Most mentioned their desire to help others.

Many also expressed their concern about the financial burden of college. Some were hoping to go to a school that had paid internships to help offset the costs, and many had already calculated what their loan debt was going to mean to their future plans, often influencing their choice of college.

Many expressed the desire to have a family in their "10-year plan", and some stressed their desire to make a lasting impact on the world. Wherever life takes them, we are proud to call them Bobcats, and wish them well in their final months of high school and beyond.
