Grand Blanc Senior Selected as Candidate for 2019 United States Presidential Scholars Program
Catherine J. Huang, a graduating senior at Grand Blanc High School, has been named one of approximately 4,500 candidates in the 2019 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. These candidates were selected from nearly 3.6 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2019.
Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
Catherine participates in HOSA, Quiz Bowl, Club Fingerprints, volunteers through the National Honor Society and enjoys participating in math competitions. She is dual-enrolled for Elementary Linear Algebra and Multivariate Calculus at the University of Michigan-Flint. She has also been awarded the St. Cecilia Society Music Award multiple times for piano, which she has played for 14 years. She maxed out the ACT with a top score of 36 on every multiple-choice section. She is interested in the field of biostatistics and is currently awaiting admissions decisions before choosing a university/college. Catherine is the daughter of Jennifer Wang and Mike Huang and has two brothers, Eric and Edward.
Now a distinguished panel of educators will review candidates like Catherine, and select 600 semifinalists in early April. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May. Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen. Those selected Scholars are invited to Washington, D.C. in June for the National Recognition Program, featuring various events and enrichment activities and culminating in the presentation of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.
Grand Blanc Community Schools is proud to have Catherine represent our school community with her academic excellence and wish her the best both in the selection process for the Presidential Scholars program, and in her future endeavors.
